"With the spread of the Industrial Internet of Things, companies are seeking to gather data from throughout their operations, often in challenging environments both indoors and outdoors," explains Simone Ferri, general manager of the AMS MEMS sub-group of STMicroelectronics, in support of the need for the company's latest sensor design. "Our latest waterproof MEMS pressure sensors provide the environmental robustness needed to power digital transformation everywhere, with the long-term availability needed to protect customers' designs."

The ILPS28QSW is an absolute pressure sensor with 0.5hPa accuracy and switchable scale from 260-1,260hPa to 260-4,060hPa, but it's the robustness of the sensor which STMicro says makes it sand out from the competition. It is, according to the company's testing, operable in ambient temperatures of -40°C to 105°C (-40°F to 221°F), can withstand over-pressure up to 10-bar, and comes fully sealed.

The latter feature bears further investigation: the sensor arrives in a sealed surface-mount package with a ceramic substrate and internal potting gel, both designed to keep water from getting in and damaging the electronics. The sensor's lid is made from steel with an O-ring seal and epoxy adhesive, all of which combine to offer what STMicro says is a market-first IP58 environmental protection rating — meaning the sensor can withstand immersion in up to one meter (3.3 feet) of water.

This ties in well with the sensor's final feature, a Qvar electrostatic charge sensing channel. Using this, the company explains, it's possible to use the sensor to monitor the level of a liquid and immediate respond to "even the tiniest of leaks."

The ILPS28QSW is now in mass production, priced at $3 per unit in 1,000-unit tray quantities. More information is available on the STMicro website.
